Was verbirgt sich hinter dem Namen „On2 Flix Engine SDK for Flash 8“? Bei der On2 Flix Engine handelt es sich um eine Software, die serverseitig Videos in das Flashvideoformat umwandeln kann. Von praktischem Nutzen dies beispielsweise sein, wenn man einen Dienst wie „YouTube“ anbieten möchte: Anwender laden Videos in einem nahezu beliebigen Format auf einen Server, die Engine encodet das Video dann als .flv-Datei.
Im Gegensatz zu der Open-Source Lösung ffmpeg oder der Turbine Video Engine steht selbstverständlich auch der hauseigene VP6 Codec mit allen seinen Vorteilen zur Auswahl (vgl. „Interaktives Video …“, Kapitel 12.1: Codecs). Auch alle gängigen Features wie Variable Bitrate, Two-Pass-Encoding oder Alphakanal sind integriert.
Die Flix Engine gibt es sowohl für Linux als auch für Windows. Die Anbindung kann je nach Plattform auf unterschiedliche Weise erfolgen (z.B. Visual Basic, C/C++/C#, Delphi, .NET, Java, VBScript, ASP, Microsoft Office, PHP, Python, Perl).
Offiziell wird kein Preis für die Engine genannt, ein Hinweis findet sich jedoch beim holländischen Anbieter FlashHosting (3750€).

On2 Technologies Announces Apple® iPhone, iPod®, & QuickTime® Support with Flix® Engine

On2’s flagship multi-format video encoding platform update released to create iPhone, iPod, and QuickTime compatible video
San Francisco, CA (January 17, 2008) – On2 Technologies, Inc., (AMEX:ONT), a leader in video compression solutions, announced today at Macworld Conference and Expo 2008 that it has released a new update to its popular Flix Engine for creating Apple iPhone compatible video. Flix Engine is a leading server side encoding platform used by a large number of Web 2.0 websites and leading enterprises for creating video in multiple formats, including video for Adobe® Flash® Player 8 and 9, H.264 and 3GPP. As a result of this announcement, Flix Engine now also supports Apple QuickTime files for iPhone and iPod, providing video programmers and service providers support for the leading video formats for web and mobile video within a single encoding platform.

On2 Flix Engine is a video encoding software development kit (SDK) with industry standard API’s for building encoding applications. Flix Engine is available in Windows and Linux versions. Currently shipping, the new update is provided as a free upgrade to Flix Engine.
